ATHENS, Ohio – Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly is offering unusual advice to drug addicts after he says there’s a confirmed case of the drug Krokodil in his county.

Krokodil is a drug originally from Russia that turns a user’s skin into scaly, scabbed-over flesh and can lead to death.

Krokodil is difficult to test for but Kelley said, after what was found Thursday, he’s confident it’s here.

“The deputy said the injection point right in the vein, at that [...]

MOSCOW, July 11 (RIA Novosti) – Police in Russia’s capital have seized more than 150 kilograms of heroin, worth an estimated $60 million, in the past 10 days, Russia’s drug czar said Thursday.

That amount of heroin, believed to have come from No. 1 opiate producer Afghanistan, is enough for 6.5 million individual hits, according to the Federal Drug Control Service. For comparison, Moscow’s total population is estimated at 12 million.

Almost a quarter of the heroin produced in war-torn Afghanistan passes through Central Asia, and 75 percent of that is “destined for the [...]

Bolivia plans to buy Russia’s two Mi-17 helicopters to fight drug trafficking, Bolivian Defence Minister Ruben Saavedra said on Sunday.

Within the upcoming 30 days Russia’s governmental commission will visit Bolivia to discuss issues related to the purchase of helicopters, he said.

Nicaraguan navy special forces "capture" drug traffickers

4/04/2013

By Tim Rogers / Time

The headlines in Nicaragua these days have a familiar echo. In what feels like a 30-year high school reunion, the reanimated socialist Sandinista Front, led by president Daniel Ortega, is rekindling its old revolutionary romance with Russia, which has promised its former tovarishch millions of dollars in weapons, uniforms, helicopters, armored vehicles and training.

But this time, the Russian arms will be targeted at drug traffickers, not political insurgents. And the U.S., which spent billions of dollars to stop the expansion of Soviet influence in Central America in the 1980s, is welcoming its [...]

Central Asia: Cold-War Attitudes Hindering Drug War

2/07/2013

Narcotics use is wreaking havoc in Russia, responsible for 30,000 annual deaths and 200 new HIV infections every day. But Vladimir Putin’s Kremlin is letting knee-jerk hostility toward the United States cloud its response to the drug-trafficking crisis. Not only is Russia reluctant to go along with a Washington-designed anti-trafficking blueprint, Moscow is believed to be leaning on Central Asian states not to cooperate either.

Back in July 2011, Washington unveiled its so-called Central Asia Counter-narcotics Initiative (CACI) to battle drug traffickers throughout the region and reduce the volume of drugs [...]
